Understanding the Link Between ADHD and Omega-3

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is commonly misconceived as a very bad thing. The truth about ADHD is that it really isn’t a terrible thing, depending on how you look at it. Those diagnosed with ADHD commonly display higher levels of social intelligence and attention to detail. They also have the ability to excel in certain fields, and are more compassionate and empathetic.

What are the Symptoms of ADHD?

Let’s start with the basics of this disorder; There are three main symptoms to ADHD that help doctors diagnose it from the beginning:

i) Inattention (or lack of attention span)

ii) Impulsivity, and

iii) Hyperactivity.

But what do these mean exactly?

Inattention (or lack of attention span) is fairly self-explanatory. It is the inability or struggle to stay focused when put to a task, such as school or work. However, this does not mean that they are incapable of focusing or the ability to focus. People diagnosed with ADHD have proven to become very focused or indulged when dealing with something that interests them.

The next symptom is impulsivity, which can be easy to recognize in adolescence or adulthood. However,  impulsivity can be extremely hard to identify in children. In a nutshell, impulsivity is “doing without thinking”. This symptom may put anyone diagnosed with ADHD at more risk than any of the other symptoms. This is because of the risky and unpredictable behaviour. It is completely natural for children to be impulsive sometimes. Therefore, this is one symptom you may have trouble identifying in young children.

Lastly, and most predominantly, is hyperactivity. This is commonly the first thing that comes to mind for most people about ADHD. Hyperactivity is essentially a combination of all these traits, and more. Hyperactivity consists of inattentive and impulsive traits, but also signs of constant activity or being easily distracted. This is also the one that would cause fidgeting, wandering, and occasional disruptiveness.

The Battle Against ADHD.

There is specific medication designed to combat and suppress the effects of ADHD. However, there are also natural ways that may be cheaper and more pleasant for children. The best natural method would be through Omega-3 fatty acid supplements.

There are studies that have proven Omega-3s to be helpful with cognitive development and strengthening; this itself may be enough to lessen the effects of ADHD.  Samples from studies show a pattern of lower EPA and DHA in the blood of those diagnosed with ADHD. This is compared to the sample group diagnosed without ADHD. By ingesting Omega-3s, whether naturally or through supplements, you are effectively fulfilling the lack of these fatty acids. The results show a closing gap between children diagnosed with ADHD and children diagnosed without. It has become common knowledge in recent years that Omega-3’s are essential to a healthier lifestyle. However, it is not so commonly known that these fatty acids are actually very good for your brain health too.

Fish?

Remember when your grandparents always used to tell you that fish was good for your brain? Well, they weren’t lying. EPA and DHA are both essential for optimal brain function and development. Both EPA and DHA improve blood flow, which in turn helps  improves brain development and overall neurological functions.

Now, with this new knowledge, there are multiple ways to implement these healthy acids into your lifestyle. Omega-3 supplements won’t come cheap, but they are the best way to ensure that you are meeting your daily requirements. Eating two servings (3.5oz = 1 serving) of fatty fish (such as salmon, herring, or tuna) is another good way. However, this option is not as quick and easy.

Omega-3s supplements are a fantastic and easy way to stay very healthy. They also help in the combat against one of the most common neurological disorders in modern society.
